History

HISTORY LEARNING INTENT

If History were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.

The stories about history that are told in school inspire and inform our pupils to find out more, be creative and not only learn facts, but to empathise and enquire about what life was really like for people in the past.

Historical enquiry underpins much of the exciting topic work that children engage with at Wragby Primary School. This love of the past is promoted extremely well in each class through the topic theme and the expertise of each class teacher. Always really throwing themselves into the period by creating exciting classroom environments, endpoint celebrations or dressing up as characters from the past. History is taught distinctly but often occurs with many cross curricular links in Literacy, Drama, Art, IT and RE.

Statement of Intent:

· To develop all children’s understanding of their place in the world; to promote curiosity and fascination – to become an active learner with a passion for history

· To develop in all children a sense of who they are locally, nationally and globally

· To develop well-rounded and successful historians, informed by the National Curriculum, and exposed to planned and differentiated lessons, taught with a clear history objective

· To develop a knowledge of chronology within which children can organise their understanding of the past

Key concepts and skills
Children will have a knowledge and understanding of:

· A sense of time – with a coherent, chronological understanding

· Cause and consequence

· Continuity and change

· Historical interpretation

· Historical context

· Appreciating diversity including the nature of the British Isles

Children will be able to:

· Effectively use a range of artefacts and sources, analyse nature, origin, purpose, utility, accuracy and reliability – how do we know this?

· Consider causation and significance of key events

· Utilise opportunities outside the classroom including home learning to enrich experience

· Learn without limits, making cross-curricular links to secure application and mastery

. To learn about the lives of ordinary and significant people from the past.

The Curriculum will:

· Ensure continuity and progression across key stages, recognising History as an enquiry with a focus on skills and deepening knowledge and understanding, supported by robust assessment

· Encourage enquiry, inference, the ability to use high-order vocabulary, questioning, curiosity and communication
