Music Intent

“Music is the tool to express life – and all that makes a difference.” – Herbie Hancock

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.” – Plato

At Wragby, the intention is that children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating and composing across a wide variety of styles, traditions and musical genres. Our objective at Wragby is to develop a curiosity for the subject, as well as understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of music in both the school and the wider community. Wherever possible, we try to enable the children to use their musical skills, knowledge and experiences by involving themselves in music in a variety of different contexts within school and the wider community. Teamwork is encouraged through whole school singing and a range of paired/ group activities within the class. An awareness of music and technology can be integrated and fostered through explicit links with composing and computing.

Our curriculum in enriched still further through links with the Lincolnshire Music Service, who offer a wide range of 1:1 and small group instrumental tuition.

Impact

Our music Curriculum is planned to demonstrate progression and build on and embed current skills. We focus on progression of knowledge and skills in the different musical components and teaching of vocabulary also forms part of the units of work.

If children are achieving the knowledge and skills in lessons, then they are deemed to be making good or better progress.

We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

 · Pupil discussions and interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice).

· Annual reporting and tracking of standards across the curriculum.

· Photo and video evidence of the pupils practical learning.

 · Use of the assessment tools provided within the Charanga scheme.

· Dedicated music leader time.
